15 Outfit Formulas That Work for School Runs and Everything After

Some mornings I have the mental energy to actually think through an outfit, and most mornings I very much do not. What’s saved me on the low-energy days is having a handful of go-to outfit formulas memorized, so getting dressed becomes more of a fill-in-the-blank exercise than an actual decision.

These are the 15 formulas I rotate through most, counted down to the one I probably wear the most out of my entire closet. None of these require buying anything new, they’re really just combinations worth remembering, and most of them lean on the same handful of capsule wardrobe pieces I already reach for constantly.

Keds and jeans with tunic. Spring clothes on brown shelf. Lady’s garments in classic shop. New arrivals at vintage store.

15. Jeans, a Button-Down, and Sneakers

This one reads polished without trying very hard, which is exactly the energy most mornings call for. Tuck the button-down in loosely rather than fully, it keeps the whole look from feeling too stiff for an actual school run.

Roll the sleeves partway up for a slightly more relaxed finish. This formula takes me from drop-off straight into a work call without needing to change anything.

14. Leggings, an Oversized Sweater, and Boots

For the days that call for comfort above everything else, this combination still manages to look intentional rather than like I gave up entirely. The oversized sweater does most of the visual work here, so the leggings underneath can be as comfortable as they need to be.

Ankle boots dress this up slightly more than sneakers would, useful for a day that might unexpectedly involve something beyond the school run.

13. A Slip Dress Layered Over a Long-Sleeve Top

This is a trick I picked up fairly recently and now use constantly through the colder months, since it extends the life of dresses I’d otherwise only wear in warmer weather. A simple long-sleeve top underneath, plus tights and boots, turns a summer dress into a genuinely year-round piece.

Keep the underlayer fitted rather than bulky so the dress silhouette still reads as one piece. This formula has quietly become one of my favorites for feeling like I made an effort without much actual effort.

12. Wide-Leg Pants and a Fitted Top

Balancing proportions is really the whole trick to this formula, a looser bottom paired with something more fitted on top keeps the whole outfit from looking shapeless. This works especially well on days I want to feel a bit more put-together without wearing anything remotely restrictive.

A simple fitted t-shirt or tank underneath is honestly enough, the wide-leg pants carry most of the outfit’s visual interest on their own.

11. A Denim Jacket Over Absolutely Anything

If I’m not sure what to wear, throwing a denim jacket over whatever I’ve already got on almost always solves the problem. It works over a dress, over leggings and a tee, over a button-down, there’s genuinely not much it doesn’t improve.

This is my go-to formula for days with unpredictable weather, since it layers easily on top of something lighter without requiring a full outfit rethink.

10. A Midi Skirt With a Tucked-In Tee

This combination reads more put-together than the effort it actually takes, a simple t-shirt tucked into a midi skirt, finished with sneakers or flats depending on the day. It’s become my default for days that need to look slightly more intentional than jeans and a t-shirt.

A high-waisted skirt makes the tucking easier and more flattering than a lower-rise style. This is a formula I lean on for school events specifically, since it strikes the right balance without feeling overdressed.

9. Straight-Leg Jeans and a Cropped Sweater

The proportions here work well for almost any body type, a slightly cropped sweater paired with a higher-rise straight-leg jean creates a clean line without requiring anything particularly fitted. This has become one of my most repeated fall and winter formulas.

Add the denim jacket from earlier on this list over the top for cooler mornings, then peel it off once the day warms up.

8. Leggings and a Long Tunic Top

For days that need to prioritize comfort and coverage, a long tunic-style top over leggings solves both without sacrificing a finished look. This is my go-to when I know the day involves a lot of bending, chasing, or sitting on the floor with kids.

Look for a top that hits mid-thigh or longer so the proportions read intentional rather than like an oversized t-shirt situation.

7. A Structured Blazer Over a Basic Tee and Jeans

This formula is my go-to when the day includes something slightly more professional layered on top of the usual school run chaos, a work meeting or a call that needs video on. The blazer instantly elevates a basic base outfit.

Keep the jeans and tee simple and let the blazer do the heavy lifting, adding more than one statement piece tends to compete rather than complement.

6. A Sweater Dress and Tall Boots

One of my favorite cold-weather formulas, since it’s just two pieces and still looks like I put thought into it. A sweater dress paired with tall boots covers comfort, warmth, and a finished look all at once.

Add tights underneath on the coldest days, and this formula works from a casual weekend all the way through a slightly dressier event.

5. Athletic Leggings and a Cropped Jacket

For the mornings that involve an actual workout, or just look like they might, pairing athletic leggings with a slightly more structured cropped jacket bridges the gap between gym clothes and an actual outfit. This has saved me more than once on a day where I didn’t have time to change between a workout and drop-off.

A sneaker in a neutral tone ties the whole look together without looking like I’m still mid-workout hours later.

4. A Button-Down Dress With Sneakers

A shirt dress is one of the more underrated pieces in my closet, comfortable enough for an all-day chase-the-kids situation but still reading as a genuine outfit rather than loungewear. Sneakers underneath keep it from feeling overly formal for an ordinary day.

Cinch it with a simple belt if you want a bit more shape, or leave it loose for maximum comfort on a long day.

3. Jeans, a Graphic Tee, and the Denim Jacket

This is my most casual formula on the list, and also one of the most reached for, since some mornings really do just call for something simple and comfortable. A graphic tee adds a bit of personality without requiring any real styling effort.

Keep the jeans and jacket simple and neutral so the graphic tee can actually stand out as the interesting piece of the outfit.

2. A Midi Dress With a Cardigan

This formula has become my reliable choice for anything from a school event to a casual dinner out, since a midi dress already does most of the outfit work and the cardigan adds warmth without covering up the whole look. It’s polished without feeling like I tried too hard for a random Tuesday.

Swap the cardigan for the blazer from earlier if the occasion calls for something slightly more put-together.

1. Jeans, a White Tee, and Whatever Shoes Match the Day

This is the formula I come back to more than any other on this list, mostly because it’s foolproof and flexible enough to work for almost any day. A simple white tee and well-fitted jeans form a blank canvas that adapts to sneakers for an active day, flats for something slightly dressier, or boots when it’s cold.

The whole point of a good formula is that it removes the decision entirely, and this one has done that more reliably for me than anything else in my closet. Some days simple really is better, especially when simple still manages to look like you tried. If you want to take this further, I’ve written up the full weekly outfit system I build around these same formulas, along with the capsule wardrobe guide that got me here in the first place.
